Lines of Work series

A collection of pencil studies and oil paintings which explore and map hidden or overlooked lines made on the landscape by past (and present) industries and activities.  In the Loxley valley, Sheffield, these activities include ganister mining, coppicing, flour milling, steel and iron forging, brick and paper manufacturing and farming.

The dilapidated factories and mills in the valley are full of traces, remnants of activity, lost purposes. Once solid, utilitarian and industrious; now transient spaces with skeletal frames, delicate shells and dark voids.
